back to news december
Wow, the shows continue to fall into my lap. This time we'll be opening for Transylvanian Polka and The Sheds (from Nanaimo) on Saturday January 8, 2005 upstairs at the Waldorf 1489 E. Hastings, Vancouver BC. I think the doors open at 9pm. I'm a bit unclear as to whether the cover is $7 or $5... er, come on down to find out! Be forewarned though, Trevor has been threatening to leave his clothes on this time, so there's no telling what he might do to try to make up for the lack of semi-nudity. Speaking of which, the Only Magazine benefit was pretty cool in spite of Trev's failed attempts at audience participation (and this was before he took his shirt off. (and why does everyone make such a big deal about me taking my shirt off anyway? I don't get it)).... General concensus seems to be that this was the most energetic performance we've done yet. So here's what we played: Twisted Sunshine, That Water
Fountain Spoke To Me, november
The Rain and the Sidewalk will be performing at a benefit show for Only Magazine at Pat's Pub (403 East Hastings Street, Vancouver BC) on Saturday Dec 4 with Sparrow and The Regional Hats. $5 cover. Well, the first couple of weeks of November were pretty cool. Wayde's book launch thingy went very nicely. Not only did The Rain and the Sidewalk contribute to the one-man-band article in the November issue of Discorder, but there was also an interview with me and Wayde in the November 4-10 issue of Terminal City. (Keep an eye out for a Press page on the main TRATS site sometime soon) And the show at the Butchershop was pretty cool too. Managed to get a bit of audience participation this time around (I suppose I should be a bit concerned about how eager some of my friends are to swat me with old newpapers, but I'm not), and gave away some CDs for hugs. (Though I think the highlight was when I was lying on the floor at the end of Comedy Sketch and some guy jumps on me and give me a hug while his girlfriend kissed me on the forehead...) So, here's yet another setlist: Digital*, Lifeless, Wake Me When It's Over, Hollow, Playground for Your Thoughts, JAC**, In a Moment of Weakness, Comedy Sketch / Slow-Motion S/Chattering *That's right, we opened with a Joy Division cover. Now, don't tell me you're surprised... (Sometimes that song appeals to the scarier side of me) **A Collapsing Opposites cover! (Ryan looked really embarrassed) october
One-man-band Showcase at the Butchershop Gallery, and Wayde's Performance Bond book release So it looks like The Rain and the Sidewalk will be performing at the Butchershop Gallery at Main and 26th (195 26th) on Friday November 5 with Mark of the Beats, Man Meets Bear and Collapsing Opposites. Cover is $6. Doors open at 8. (show over by midnight). If all goes well, this show should coincide with an article in the November issue of Discorder about the local weirdo one-man-band scene (or whatever you want to call it). Many thanks to Ryan of Collapsing Opposites fame for organizing the show and pitching the article idea to Discorder. Meanwhile, the Vancouver launch for Wayde Compton's new book Performance Bond (published by Arsenal Press) will be at The Lamplighter on Wednesday November 10th. The Contact Zone Crew will spin 'lit-hop on four turntables, followed by individual DJ sets by Wayde and Jason'. The book comes with a CD featuring The Reinventing Wheel: Ouroboros Mix which Trevor created some hip-hop beats for... (Didn't see that coming did you? :-)
september
We did manage to play both 'Alternative Mondays' shows with Tonechaser at the Fairview, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who did make it out to at least one of the shows (I know it can be a bit much to go to shows on Mondays). Many thanks to Angel Starr (for letting us perform) and Dave Musil (for letting us borrow his bass amp on both nights, as well as making a recording of the first show for us). On the first night we (or should that be I?) tried covering The Organ's It's Time To Go once again... (Unfortunately, I think I did a better job of it the first time at Pat's Pub... It was a bit rushed and sloppy this time...) At the second show, Angel and Dave of Tonechaser did a cover version of The Rain and the Sidewalk's Moving Backwards during a short duo set... As far I know, this is the first time anyone has done a TRATS cover... That's just too sweet...! (More setlists... - Aug. 30th - Misguided Dream, Hallucination, Twisted Sunshine, That Water Fountain Spoke To Me, Monster, In A Moment of Weakness, Abrasive Candy/Return To The Ether Landscapes/A Solitary Soul, Wake Me When It's Over/It's Time To Go, Tonight We Are Standing on the Edge of the World. Sept. 6 - 'The Rain and the Sidewalk live at the Fairview' Theme, Hallucination, Inane Pining, Repulsive Pining, Monster, Twisted Sunshine, Failures, Moving Backwards, Abrasive Candy/Return to the Ether Landscapes/Tonight We Are Standing on the Edge of the World.) Meanwhile, TRATS vocalist Shannon Hallett's new band Betty Kracker (they describe their sound as 'Grrr-age Punka-ballistic') will be performing at the Fairview (898 W. Broadway) on Monday Sep 27 with Obsidian Cream and The Twitch. And thanks to The Doers for mentioning me in their interview in the Terminal City a while back... I'm still getting a good laugh out of that :-D
august
The site is back up! We had some hosting turmoil, but everything is back to normal. So then, now, The Rain and the Sidewalk will be opening for Tonechaser at the Fairview Pub (898 W. Broadway) on Monday August 30 (and MAYBE on Monday Sept 6 as well - depending on if the Fairview is still doing "Alternative Mondays" by then) Doors will likely be at 9 or so... Sounds like it might be a pretty cheap cover charge as well (maybe as low as $3...??) so I hope to see ya there! Many thanks to Melanie & Trail vs Russia and Chris-A-Riffic & The Human Hi-lite Reel for letting TRATS open for them at Pat's Pub on July 16th... It was an honor to be on the bill with two such awesome bands. Our set seemed to go pretty well, with Wayde Compton adding a bit of keyboard/bass and Shannon Hallett adding a bit of her lovely singing. At the end of our set, Wake Me When It's Over suddenly mutated into a cover of It's Time To Go by The Organ (this was the first time TRATS has done a cover song live)... (Luckily Ashley seemed strangely ok with my stripped down rendition) One major disappointment though, once again my attempt at getting a soundboard recording failed completely... (TRATS's setlist: Suicide Note (section), It's All Falling Apart, Harmless, Idiot (the Self-Loathing Song), Slow-Motion Shattering, Failures, Wake Me When It's Over / It's Time To Go* *cover song by the Organ) And kudos to all the organizers and bands participating in the following night's Facefest 2004 at the Railway Club... 21 bands indeed played on two stages, and everything went amazingly smoothly...! Didn't bother trying to make a soundboard recording, but turns out there is an ambient/microphone recording (ie at least as much audience sound as the songs themselves :-) which you know I'll subject you to one of these days... We did a mostly different set than the night before with Wayde and Shannon adding their talents again (which makes me wonder if The Rain and the Sidewalk is a solo act with a couple of very regular guests, or a band led by a megalomaniac... hmmm...) And Shannon's new band Betty Kracker made a powerful debut there as well... (so that's like 3 shows with 2 bands in 2 nights... wow! how does she do it?) (TRATS's setlist: That Water Fountain Spoke to Me, Inane Pining, Comedy Sketch / Slow-Motion S/Chattering, Lifeless) and that same weekend I somehow wound up in the Justify Yourself column in the Terminal City... (don't worry, you didn't really miss much, there isn't any justification for me :-) july Two shows coming up in July! (Note: Apparently New Years Resolution won't be able to make it to the Pat's Pub show on July 16th due to their keyboard player recovering from recent surgery, so it sounds like Trail vs. Russia will be filling in for them instead.)On Friday July 16th, The Rain and the Sidewalk will be performing at Pat's Pub (403 East Hastings Street, Vancouver BC), opening for New Years Resolution and The Human Hi-Lite Reel... I'm not sure whether NYR or HHR is headlining, but I know we're on first, so since Pat's Pub closes early, I'm assuming we'll be starting at around 9PM. Not sure what the cover $ will be yet, probably not much. I'll update this when I get more info... And if that's not enough, the following night (Satuday, July 17) TRATS will be performing at this year's Facefest at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir St Vancouver BC) along with about 20 other bands...! Last I heard we're scheduled to play in the smoking room at around 11:15, but this might very well change... (And occassional TRATS guest vocalist Shannon Hallett will be unleashing her new band Betty Kracker at the main stage at 9:30 ? or so) From the press release thingy: FACEFEST 2004 at The Railway Club, Saturday, July 17th For our 12th anniversary celebratory fundraiser for the practice space FacePlant (east end Vancouver), we have an unprecedented twenty-one bands/solo artists performing between two rooms in one venue. Yes, we're taking over the Railway Club Smoking Room as well! In addition to a couple of 'debuts' (ie. Slowpoke, Uber Sissy, Betty Kracker), FaceFest will as usual feature an eclectic selection of some of Vancouver's very finest established musical talent. Each set will be approximately fifteen minutes in length (a bit longer on the Small Stage). Shared equipment, diligent emcees and immaculate stage management (!) should make it indeed possible for this number of acts to 'fit' between the Start time of 8:00 PM and last call! Actually, we figure it will be all over by 3:00AM. Hey, we've been doing this sort of thing annually for eight years, now! Come see how it's done, and join in the fun. Show Starts 8:00PM sharp! On the Main Stage in this order (subject to change): Wet Exit - rock Pax - alt rock Reverberators Remix - experimental instro-surf/rock Betty Kracker - grrr-radge four-way The Hunter Cometh - heavy rock Vancourtland Rangers - mod revival Emergency - punk rock Filthy Rocket - punk rock Salmon Arm - art-rock Seventh Image - synthetic analogue bombast Motorama - rhythm, volume and intensity Walkerband - swaggering punk rock Bughouse Five - most entertaining rockabilly band around Uber Sissy - heavy Starting at 9:00PM on the Small Stage (Smoking Room): Huskee Dudes - sounds like...only acoustic Richard Fordham - the one and obscure Azul Salvaje - electro-organic folktronica al contraire - folk punk (punk folk?) Evan Symons - the one and only The Rain and The Sidewalk - moody semi-electronic post-post-punk art-pop Slowpoke - slow punk Tickets are $10.00 at the door for general public, $8 for Railway Club members. poster Unfortunately we only had enough time at the Music Waste show back in May to do three songs... But it turned out to be an interesting experience nonetheless. Started off with Wayde singing Adjust the Dial on the Windowsill, then did a version of Hallucination with Shannon singing and surprise guest* Meghan Engel on electric violin...(*It was a surprise to me as well... She introduced herself to Wayde and me in the Cafe Deux Soleils a few hours before we were scheduled to perform, looking for someone to jam with... I figured my luck has been really good recently, and as it turned out, it actually worked out quite nicely... Impressive...) Was then informed that we only had enough time for one more, so we did Wake Me When It's Over with Wayde on bass, Meghan on violin, and Shannon on vocals for the first half, and I took over the last half... (So much for a night of solo and duo acts ;-) The Rain and the Sidewalk will be performing at Cafe Deux Soleils (2096 Commercial Vancouver BC) on Friday May 21st as part of this year's Music Waste... Also on the bill are The littlest homie, The Wiggler, Mark of the Beats, Gordan B. Isnor and Idiots. (I don't know anything about any of them other than they're all apparently odd solo or duo acts) And if you missed the show in April, that's too bad because TRATS is planning on doing a completely different set. Bwahahaha! The show with Man Meets Bear and Collapsing Opposites at Pat's Pub back in April was a lot of fun. Instead of 3 sets, people got one 2 hour long set that started off as Man Meets Bear then mutated into Collapsing Opposites then mutated into the Rain and the Sidewalk... (Not only did I get to play a bit of bass guitar for MMB and CO, but I also had Soren (MMB) play some guitar/melodica/keyboard and Ryan (CO) play some guitar/keyboard/sax on a couple of my songs... Meanwhile Wayde Compton guested on turntables and backing vocals for TWASOTEOTW, and Shannon Hallett was the mysterious vocalist on Slow-Motion Shattering...! (I suggested there'd be surprises, didn't I?) This show was also reviewed in the May issue of Discorder)... (TRATS's set: The Evil One, Tonight We Are Standing On The Edge of the World, Harmless, Moving Backwards, Repulsive Pining, Monster, Comedy Sketch, Slow-Motion Shattering.) And yes, the last time I checked (May 12) the main TRATS site is down. We're working on it. (Might be up by now for all I know...) April

09, 2003: Shindig, New Project Coming, and Sad News First off, it looks like it's now official: The Rain and the Sidewalk will be playing at The Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street, Vancouver, BC) on Sept. 16 as part of this year's Shindig, CITR's annual battle of the bands). Go figure... (The very idea of me playing at a 'battle of the bands' type of contest seems so absurd to me that this should be good for a laugh... even if it's at my expense :-) Meanwhile, Wayde Compton's next book (which should be published sometime next year) will likely include a CD (kind of an alternate version of Wayde's "The Reinventing Wheel" project) that Trevor contributed something vaguely resembling hip-hop beats(!) to. Stay tuned for more details... And if that's not enough, it looks like The Rain and the Sidewalk's ever-forthcoming debut CD 'Inanimate' is actually (finally) very close to completion (Not that Trevor has any idea what to do with it when it's done, but that's another story...) Finally, some sad news. In case you haven't already heard, Ms. T's Cabaret (the only club that TRATS has performed live at so far) was destroyed in a fire that burned down the Victory Block building on the 300 block of West Pender St in downtown Vancouver on July 4... As far as I know, there was fortunately no loss of life but the whole building (including apparently artist galleries...) is gone, with many people losing everything...

New Mixes and New site Trevor has set up a new site on the Severed Heads community. http://trats.sevcom.com The site will contain yet more mixes and songs which you won't be able to find anywhere but there. The songs will also be available in a lower quality MP3 version, so all you out there still on dial up can download them faster. New mixes have been added for download! Lifeless (machine mix) Malibu (burnt-out mix) Also, some of the mixes are going to be taken off the site at the end of the month. Gonna be rotating the mixes available every couple of months from now on. Check back often for new mixes and news.
Additionally, many songs from Mangled have apparently been broadcast on Furthermore (hosted by Adrian Bertram and Shannon O'Neill) on 2mbs-fm 102.5mhz, Sydney, Australia, including Trevor's slightly out of character interpretation of the Severed Heads' song Propellor which was apparently aired on December 19th. Meanwhile, Trevor is still tinkering with the long overdue Inanimate CD. Trevor is confident that he will be finished with it by the year 2015 :-) (assuming the human race hasn't wiped itself out before then...) Aug
24 2002: Mofo's 4-0 Party: with Shrimpmeat
and guests Ms T's Cabaret (339 W Pender, Vancouver) Many
cool surprises. You should have been there. Thanks to everyone for putting up with me. (And thanks to Mofo for giving us all an excuse to have a party!) TRATS's
set: Wake Me When It's Over / Abrasive Candy / Harmless / Hollow / Twisted Sunshine*
/ Slow-Motion S/chattering** *an inadvertently
unique version (You'd think Trevor would know how that song's supposed to go
by now...)

Trevor's Incoherent Thoughts On His First Live Show
Shannon
and Mofo
for being crazy enough to take a chance with me...
Also kudos to Mofo for putting up with my constant whining about the monitor
mix ("More vocals! More vocals! More vocals!! Ok, now less feedback and more
vocals!" Might have helped if I'd actually sung into the mic instead of constantly
moving off axis) And kudos to Paul for doing a great salvage job with the inscrutable
sub-mixes I gave him to work with..
Brain
Surgery did a great job with the visuals (and as an added bonus, inadvertently
gave me just enough light to see what the heck I was doing). Thanks
to everyone for coming out and being so nice! TRATS's
set: Hollow* / Repulsive Pining** / Hallucination / Harmless / Comedy Sketch
/ Moving Backwards / Tonight We Are Standing On The Edge Of The World / Slow-Motion
S/chattering*** *hampered
slighty by Trevor's apparent inability to perform without a perfect monitor
mix. What a wimp. Overall, not exactly flawless, but a good starting point

The
Rain and the Sidewalk This
site has mutated slightly. From now on the artist formerly known as Introvert shall be called The Rain and the Sidewalk(lifted from the lyrics to a song which might appear on the second CD...if Trevor ever manages to finish mixing the first one before going completely insane...) Thanks to Wayde Compton and Dave for their valuable (and somewhat entertaining) input.
Meanwhile,
Mofo (the guy who designed this site) has set up mofoRadio
at MP3.com. He's been kind enough to add some of The Rain and the Sidewalk
tracks onto his playlist, among much other stuff, so be sure to check it out.
We've added a new unreleased track to the site; it's an alternate mix of Tonight We Are Standing on the Edge of the World. Enjoy! Past News Wayde Compton's debut performance of his Turntable Poetry project at the SFU Harbour Center on Nov 15 was a success. (Check out Wayde's site for more info about the Reinventing Wheel.) Having helped Wayde record his voice/words for the project (and having helped carry his turntables and mixer from the car to the Time Centre Policy room), Trevor was ecstatic to hear Wayde's performance go so well.
